Organizations to Assist Seniors:
AARP is a United States-based interest group whose stated mission is “to empower people to choose how they live as they age.” According to the organization, it had more than 38 million members as of 2018.
The mission of Aging Well in Waldo County is to mobilize our communities to identify and address the needs of our aging friends and neighbors, striving for inclusive, supportive and safe communities for all.
Serving Seniors in Eastern Maine – Eastern Area Agency on Aging has been serving Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, and Washington counties since 1973. With a specially trained and dedicated staff, we are able to provide seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers with a variety of options, opportunities, resources and referrals.
We provide free, high quality legal services to Maine’s socially and economically needy elderly age 60 and over.
LSE provides persons age 60 and over with free legal advice regarding health care, health insurance, Medicare (including Part D), MaineCare (Medicaid), Social Security and other public benefits, pension and retirement benefits, powers of attorney, consumer matters including creditor and bankruptcy problems, physical and financial abuse, guardianship defense and other issues.

Incorporated as the Western Maine Older Citizens Council, SeniorsPlus, located in Lewiston, Maine has been serving the needs of older people since 1972. SeniorsPlus is a private non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, serving as a trusted resource center for Western Maine (Androscoggin, Oxford, and Franklin Counties).
Every stage of life brings joys and challenges unique to an individual’s circumstances. For more than four decades Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) has provided the resources, programs and people to ensure that older adults and adults living with disabilities in Cumberland and York counties maintain their vitality well past the age of sixty.
Spectrum Generations, the Central Maine Area Agency on Aging and Aging and Disability Resource Center, has been a leading provider of information and advice, referrals, programs and activities for adults for over 30 years.
Thrive Penobscot, is investing in the well-being of those living in the Katahdin and Lincoln Lakes region by addressing some of the most pressing issues and needs facing older people and those living with chronic disease. Based out of Millinocket Regional Hospital, Thrive Penobscot is a network of over 30 Partners collaborating to increase knowledge, availability and use of resources for transportation, food security, social interaction and caregiver support. The goal of the collaborative is to link people to resources to live well longer in a place they call home.

No one in Maine should go hungry. And we believe there is a solution to the problem of hunger in Maine. For every person who is currently in need, there are even more Mainers willing and able to reach out with a helping hand.
There are several food pantries and food banks in the state of Maine. With help from users like you we have compiled a list of some.
Programs including: Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), 3D Catering, Meals in Wheels, Social dinning & Furry Friends food bank
Eastern Area Agency on Aging is dedicated to preserving the special bond between seniors and their pets by providing pre-packaged standardized bags of pet food and basic pet care supplies to low-income seniors on a monthly basis through our Furry Friends Food Bank (FFFB).
There are services across the state that support older adults, adults with physical disabilities, family members, and care partners. A wide range of needs can be met with these services, from home-based care and access to healthy food, to opportunities to socialize and recreate in the community, to receiving care at a nursing facility.
The State of Maine requires both a financial and functional assessment to determine an individual’s eligibility for most In-Home Services.
Assessments help individuals and families understand what services are available to them and to plan for service needs.
Financial assessments are completed by the Office of Family Independence. Functional assessments are completed by Maine’s Assessing Services Agency. The Medical Eligibility Determination Form (MED) is the tool approved by DHHS to determine functional program eligibility for this service.
The Office of Aging and Disability Services (OADS) oversees programs and services that help older adults, adults with physical and cognitive disabilities, and their care partners maintain their overall well-being in their communities.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (commonly called LIHEAP or HEAP) provides money to low income homeowners and renters to help pay heating costs. Eleven Community Action Programs distribute the funds throughout Maine, in most cases directly to the fuel vendors. The program is not intended to pay for all heating costs, but to assist in paying the heating bills.
LIHEAP is Federally funded through the Department of Health and Human Services. The Federal government establishes funding levels annually. LIHEAP is targeted to low and very low-income Maine homeowners and renters.
Health & Prevention Programs:
Currently, more than 29,000 people in Maine are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and over 69,000 families and friends are providing care.
Serving the entire state of Maine from our Scarborough office the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter is here to help. We provide education and support to all those facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias throughout our community, including those living with the disease, caregivers, health care professionals, and families. We are also committed to advocating for the needs and rights of those facing Alzheimer’s disease and advancing critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and, ultimately, a cure.

Often individuals have multiple needs, and 24/7 skilled medical care is a necessity. We have been voted BEST NURSING FACILITY for the last three years running. Our skilled nursing staff, working together with rehabilitation, social service, activities and dietary, deliver excellent clinical outcomes. We provide extensive medical care coordinated by the development of an individual care plan and reviewed by an inter-functional team of medical professionals.
The mission of the Elder Abuse Institute of Maine is to promote the awareness and prevention of elder abuse through direct services, training, research, outreach, and advocacy.

We have 17 Senior Colleges in Maine and 6,500 members across the state. Each senior college plans exciting, intellectually stimulating non-credit courses (taught by volunteers) as well as providing a range of exciting learning opportunities for adults over the age of 50.
Senior College provides a diverse curriculum of programs, classes and special events for those 50 years and older, along with their spouses or partners. Enjoy subjects ranging from the intellectually challenging to the purely enjoyable. We’re the second largest of the 17 Senior Colleges in the state with more than 500 mid-coast members.

The Bangor Region YMCA Second Wind Program gives older adults the opportunity to participate in physical and social activities in a fun, safe, and friendly environment.
