National Senior Citizens Day: Appreciating Our Senior Citizens

Celebrate National Senior Citizens Day – August 21

August 21 is recognized as National Senior Citizens Day, first established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. It’s a day to honor the many ways seniors enrich our communities. From volunteering and staying active in civic life to sharing wisdom and guidance with younger generations, senior citizens play an invaluable role in society.

How Can You Show Appreciation?

Here are a few meaningful ways to celebrate the seniors in your life—not just on August 21, but year-round:

1. Offer a simple thank you.
A handshake, a smile, or a kind word can go a long way. Many seniors may not even know the day is dedicated to them, and a heartfelt thank you can brighten their day.

2. Visit a local assisted living or nursing home.
Too many seniors in care facilities receive very few visitors. Taking just a few minutes to sit, talk, and share stories can make a world of difference.

3. Send a handwritten note.
In today’s world of emails and texts, handwritten letters feel extra special. Many seniors grew up when letters were the primary way to stay in touch. Taking time to write a note shows thoughtfulness and care.
