Genetic Testing Scams are a New Type of Fraud

Genetic Testing Scams: A Growing Threat to Medicare Beneficiaries

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) has issued a national alert warning Medicare beneficiaries about a new type of healthcare fraud involving genetic testing. Federal authorities are investigating this widespread scam, which has already led to charges against 35 individuals and over $2.1 billion in losses nationwide.

These scams exploit both the Medicare system and unsuspecting seniors through fake offers of “free” DNA or genetic screening. Understanding how the scheme works—and how to protect yourself—can prevent identity theft, fraudulent billing, and thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges.

How the Genetic Testing Scam Works

Scammers, often posing as “recruiters” or “marketers,” target older adults through:

  • Door-to-door visits and community events
  • Telemarketing calls or email solicitations
  • Booths at health fairs or senior centers
  • Free gifts, such as ice cream or gift cards, in exchange for participation

They promise a “free genetic test” to screen for cancer, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or medication metabolism—claiming Medicare will cover the cost. Victims are then asked to provide their Medicare number or submit to an onsite cheek swab or mailed test kit.

Once the scammer obtains personal or Medicare information, they bill Medicare for unnecessary or unauthorized tests. In some cases, dishonest doctors are paid kickbacks to approve orders they never discussed with the patient.

If Medicare denies the claim, the beneficiary becomes responsible for the entire cost—often between $9,000 and $11,000 per test.

Common Types of Fraudulent Genetic Tests

Fraudsters may use these terms or offer tests that sound legitimate but are not medically approved:

  • Cancer or hereditary cancer screenings
  • DNA or ancestry tests
  • Dementia or Alzheimer’s screenings
  • Parkinson’s disease tests
  • Pharmacogenomic or medication metabolism testing

How to Protect Yourself from Genetic Testing Scams

Follow these steps to stay safe and protect your personal and Medicare information:

  1. Never accept a free genetic testing kit unless it was ordered by your personal physician.
  2. Check the sender—if you receive an unsolicited kit, refuse delivery or return it unopened, noting the sender’s name and date.
  3. Do not share your Medicare number with anyone other than your healthcare provider.
  4. Verify test legitimacy—only use testing companies approved by your doctor or a licensed medical facility.
  5. Be cautious of free offers or incentives (like gift cards) in exchange for your information.
  6. Review your Medicare Summary Notice (MSN) or Explanation of Benefits (EOB) regularly. Watch for suspicious billing terms like “molecular pathology,” “gene analysis,” or “laboratory services.”
  7. Report suspected fraud immediately to:
    • HHS-OIG Hotline: 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477)
    • Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) for your state

Why These Scams Are So Effective

Advances in DNA and genome sequencing have made personal genetic testing more accessible than ever. Legitimate tests can provide insights into ancestry, disease risk, and medication response. However, their high cost has also attracted criminal opportunists looking to profit from Medicare and unsuspecting seniors.

The scam preys on curiosity and trust—offering something that sounds beneficial, only to compromise privacy, drain savings, or lead to medical debt.

Stay Informed and Protect Your Medicare

Genetic testing can be a powerful medical tool when used correctly and prescribed by a trusted healthcare professional. But if offered by a stranger or unsolicited company, it’s a red flag.

Protect yourself and your loved ones by guarding your Medicare information, verifying all medical tests through your primary care provider, and reporting suspicious offers immediately.
