May is Older Americans Month

Celebrating Older Americans Month – Powered by Connection

Each May, the Administration for Community Living leads the national observance of Older Americans Month (OAM) — a time to celebrate the contributions of older adults, recognize aging trends, and recommit to serving the seniors in our communities.

The 2024 theme, “Powered by Connection,” highlights the incredible impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on health and well-being. Building and maintaining strong connections can reduce isolation and loneliness, support independence, and help older adults age in place with dignity.

Ways to Get Involved

  • Share the Facts – Talk about the mental, physical, and emotional benefits of staying socially connected.

  • Promote Engagement Opportunities – Highlight local community events, clubs, and volunteer opportunities that bring older adults together.

  • Connect with Services – Help seniors access transportation and other resources that remove barriers to connection.

  • Host a Connection-Focused Event – Plan activities featuring older adult mentors, peer support, or intergenerational gatherings.

  • Lead by Example – Encourage friends, colleagues, and networks to make meaningful social connections a priority.

  • Join the Conversation Online – Inspire older adults to share what connection means to them using #PoweredByConnection on social media.

Meaningful connection benefits everyone — let’s work together to build stronger, healthier, and more connected communities for older Americans.
